The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca, is an underrated jewel of the mediterranean. No matter what kind of experience you’re after, there is something for every vacationer on this island. Hiking, fine dining, strolling through quaint villages, or just lounging on the beach. You can do it all in one weekend in Mallorca.
Wander the Streets of Valldemossa
A charming mountain village twenty minutes by car from Mallorca’s capital city of Palma, Valdemossa is worth even a quick stop. Wander the windy cobblestone roads and you’ll be sure to find the perfect lookout point for a view of the stunning Tramuntana mountains or a quaint little terrace sit and sip a cafe con leche.
Try Some Local Treats
Mallorca is famous for a number of sweets that will have you considering filling up an extra suitcase with some tasty souvenirs. One of the most notable is the ensaïmada, a light and flaky sweet pastry made with lard, coiled up into a circle, and dusted with powdered sugar. Similarly, the coca de patata, which originates from the village of Valdemossa, is a little sweet roll made with potato, also topped with powdered sugar. If you visit Mallorca in the summer, you can’t leave without trying a granizado de almendra, an icy treat made with almonds and cinnamon. All of these and more can be found at the famous C’an Molina bakery in Valldemossa.
Stroll the Port de Soller
This little port village features a horseshoe bay and a pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants where you can try some local seafood. You can also enjoy the sandy beach or watch the sunset with the stunning backdrop of both mountains and sea. You can reach the port by car or catch the old wooden train that runs between Palma and Soller. The historic train from the early 1900s was originally built to transport citrus and can be a fun way to see the west side of the island.
Watch the Sunset at the Lighthouse, Cap de Formentor
After a day spent swimming at one of the island’s many beaches or calas, hop in the car and drive to the northernmost point of the island to watch the sunset. The view from this lighthouse will leave you speechless. It’s other-earthly.
Visit the Market in Santanyi
Get a feel for what the locals make and buy at this small village market that is open Saturdays and Wednesdays of every week. You’ll find everything from artisan food producers to handcrafts to clothing– the perfect place to pick up some marinated olives and bread for a beach picnic.
