Last weekend, we stayed at Barceló Maya Grand Resort and it was the perfect tropical escape. We are always looking for the best romantic getaways and the Riviera Maya in Mexico is perfect for that. We love that it’s only a short flight from the U.S. and still feels like a remote tropical paradise. After a long and rainy winter in L.A., we were craving a warm beach vacation and Barceló Maya Grand was the perfect destination!
The property at Barceló is absolutely stunning. It’s the largest resort in the Riviera Maya, which is amazing because the entire property feels isolated and the private beach is over a mile long. The ocean water is the most beautiful turquoise blue, there are endless palm trees around the resort, and the pools are as beautiful as they are refreshing. Because the property is so large, there is plenty of space, so you never have to feel like you’re surrounded by people. When we were there, the hotel was at 90% capacity and we still felt like we could always find our own little private section on the beach and in the ocean every day, which we absolutely loved.
There are four different hotels and it doesn’t matter which one you stay at, you have access to the amenities of all of them, which includes over 16 restaurants, seven different pools (including a lap pool and an adults-only pool), an incredible fitness center, and a relaxing spa. Barceló Maya Grand Resort is an all-inclusive resort, so you have access to all the buffets, snack bars, swim-up pool bars, and depending on how many nights you stay at the resort, different restaurant options all included with the price of your stay. The best part about Barceló being an all-inclusive is that you don’t have to stress about how much you’re spending on food and drinks once you’re there, which definitely helped us relax even more.
We stayed in the Junior Swim-Up Suite at Barceló Maya Caribe and absolutely loved it. The swim up suites have their own private swim up pool area and an outdoor jacuzzi. Caribe is the only hotel that has the swim up suites, so we highly recommend staying there if you want to enjoy your own private pool area. We absolutely loved having our own little pool oasis to dive into in the morning and to come back to after relaxing on the beach for a few hours.
Our favorite things to do when we were there were to wake up and watch the sunrise and then watch the sky change colors as the sun set. The sun rises over the ocean in the Riviera Maya, which is a fun change from what we’re used to in L.A. Watching the light spill over the ocean and hearing the birds chirp every morning was truly magical. The sunsets there are amazing too, because the light changes the colors of the sky to these beautiful shades of pink and blue that are so peaceful and romantic.
Barceló Maya Grand Resort is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a romantic getaway, couples trip, family vacation, or even a group holiday with your friends, because there’s something for everyone. There are waterparks for kids, basketball courts, a bowling alley, a mini golf course, and endless soft serve ice cream at the buffets. It’s by far one of the most family-friendly resorts we’ve ever stayed at. We kept saying that it would be so fun to come back here in a few years with our friends and their kids, because all the kids could play together and be easily entertained while we relaxed and hung out together. But as a couple, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there too and it was incredibly relaxing. So no matter what kind of getaway you’re looking for, you can find it all here.
The variety of restaurants makes it so that everyone can find something they like. The restaurants feature cuisine from Asia, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, and more. Our favorites were Santa Fe, Mexico Lindo, and Tokyo. The buffets also have different themes each night, so one night when we were there it was Mexican food and the next night it was Oriental. Breakfast at the buffets include a giant doughnut wall, churros (which I personally think should always be available for breakfast), fresh crepes, omelets, yogurt and fruit, and a variety of other options.
The resort really does have everything you need, so you don’t have to leave the property at all and can just relax and enjoy the resort. However, you can also plan day trips or excursions at reception. The resort is close to downtown Playa del Carmen and about forty minutes from Tulum, so you can take a day trip to see the ancient ruins, Gran Cenote, or go shopping on the beach.
