California, Nevada, North America, Travel Guides, USA

We visited South Lake Tahoe for the first time last month and it was absolutely stunning! Lake Tahoe is easily one of the most beautiful places in the United States. The best part is, it’s an incredible place to visit no matter what time of year you visit. In the summer you can swim, hike, go out on a boat, or relax on the beach and in the winter, you can ski, snowboard, snow shoe, ride the gondola up the mountain, and so much more. It’s truly the perfect destination for the outdoor adventure lover. The best way to get to Lake Tahoe is to fly into the Reno/Tahoe International Airport, and then you can either rent a car or take the South Tahoe Airporter, which is a shuttle that takes you right to the heart of South Lake Tahoe. We loved our visit so much and cannot wait to go back. Here are eight things to do in Lake Tahoe South:

8 Things to do in South Lake Tahoe:

1. Go on a Hike at Van Sickle Bi-State Park:

Lake Tahoe has so many beautiful hiking trails, which is a great way to explore the area and see stunning views of Lake Tahoe. We loved hiking in Van Sickle Bi-State Park, which is a bi-state park, because it’s in both California and Nevada. There are a lot of different hiking trails here, but we found the first part of the Tahoe Rim Trail to be a pretty family-friendly hike. Since there are so many different trails here, you can choose a short hike or a long hike and there are incredible views along the way!

2. Eat Dinner at Freshies:

Freshies is a favorite among locals and offers delicious fresh food. It’s a casual dining experience with a Hawaiian flair and they offer a variety of meals from tacos and veggie burgers to poke and curries, so there’s great options for everyone.

3. Take a Boat Tour with Alpenglow Boat Company:

We went out on the water with Alpenglow Boat Company, and it was such a fun experience and a great way to get out on the water without having your own boat! Alpen Glow Boat Co takes you out on a classic wooden boat in small private charters (maximum of six people). They offer everything from date-night cruises and birthday rides to intimate weddings and full-moon stargazing tours. The team is so kind and friendly, so really all you have to do is show up and enjoy the ride. We loved our experience, and it is truly so beautiful and relaxing to be on the lake and see the trees and the mountains from the water.

4. Drive to Glen Alpine Falls:

Glen Alpine Falls is a stunning waterfall on the south side of Fallen Leaf Lake, which is just south of Lake Tahoe. It is right off the side of the road, so it’s really easily accessible for everyone to enjoy! The drive there is absolutely beautiful, but be careful as you’re getting there, because it’s a narrow road. Glen Alpine Falls is a really beautiful and cascades 65 feet. You can walk around the area, but it doesn’t require hiking. But obviously, be careful and out for slippery rocks.

5. Grab Lunch from Sprouts:

Sprouts Cafe is a fast-casual health food restaurant in the heart of town. They offer natural food, fresh juices, and meals made with wholesome ingredients. We loved their smoothies and the breakfast burrito. It’s a great spot to go for a refreshing mid-day pick me up.

6. Spend the Day at Zephyr Cove Beach:

Zephyr Cove Beach is a great spot to come and spend a summer day in Lake Tahoe. It has a lot of amenities, including food stands and restrooms, so you can easily spend the entire day relaxing, hangin out, and playing in the water here! They even have campgrounds and cabins if you want to stay here too.

7. Watch Sunset from Logan Shoals Vista Point:

Logan Shoals Vista Point is a beautiful point with a short walking trail to lots of different spots where you can sit and enjoy the views of Lake Tahoe. It’s the perfect spot to come for sunset, because the sun sets right over the lake and behind the mountains. We came here to watch sunset pretty much every night and loved it!

8. Eat & Shop at Heavenly Village:

We stayed right by Heavenly Village at Forest Suites Resort, and Heavenly Village is such a cute area with the best mountain town vibes. We loved browsing the local shops and eating at the restaurants there! We ate at California Burger Company and Base Camp Pizza here and really liked both of them. Be sure to get the sweet potato tots if you go to California Burger Company. And be sure to get a caramel apple from Champagne & Chocolate, because there’s something about visiting a mountain town that just makes me feel like you have to get a caramel apple. We got the Oreo one and it was delicious! You can also take the gondola up the mountain from here during most months of the year!

South Lake Tahoe is such a fun family-friendly destination that truly offers something for everyone! Whether you want to go explore the great outdoors or snuggle up and enjoy the cozy mountain vibes, South Lake Tahoe is the perfect place to visit!
